Oxford Regatta

  • Tred Avon YC
  • Oxford, MD

Last weekend 37 boats descended upon Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford Maryland. There were 31 full rigs and 6 radials - another fantastic turnout for Oxford. We were treated to the usual fanfare - decent courses, good food, great music, and lots of sailors. The downside this year was that the breeze didn't cooperate too well. That's ok, we had Alain Vincey (Fishing Bay) to keep our spirits up. Alain - did they kick you out of FBYC for missing your own Annual?

On Saturday we were able to get in just one lone race after a long delay off and on-shore. Nick von der Wense (SSA) picked up the bullet on Saturday and probably felt pretty good about his chances of medaling. Close on his heel was Dave Schoene (SSA) and Mark Bear (Newport - but formerly from District 11).

On Saturday night a bunch of people ventured down the street to the Pier Street Crab House. I highly recommend a repeat of that course of action for 2003. We capped it off with a bit of dancing under the stars.

Sunday morning started out promising with a decent 8 knot breeze filtering down the Tred Avon River. Unfortunately it died. Somehow three races were held, with Mike Schmidt picking up two bullets in the Senior division. It wasn't enough for the overall victory though as Schoene was Mr. Consistency, carding a 2,5,7,5 for the regatta. Top female and third overall was Diane Burton (SSA) just 2 points out of the gold.

Over in the Jr. Division (they sailed together with us but were scored separately) Tred Avon's own Austin Kana took top honors followed by Brady White and Brendan Healy, both from Annapolis Yacht Club.

In the radial fleet, Tred Avon's Brian Adelbeger took the gold followed by Matt Petsas (RYC) and Glenn Smyth (RYC). Congratulations go out to all the competitors for surviving such substandard racing conditions - realy, it's never like that usually!

Other noteable happenings...there were a couple of folks down from Pennsylvania (Marsh Creek Sailing Club) including Richard Plunkett. In addition, Ben Kukendall made it over from the Potomac River fleet in Alexandria, Va. It's great to see everyone traveling to these events.
