The 30th running of the the Sunshine Open Laser Regatta took place this past weekend (April 13-14) at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, Maryland. True to the billing, there was plenty of sunshine, with the breeze cooperating ever-so-slightly. 37 boats came out for the two day, 6 race affair. The courses were mainly W/L, and the breeze was out of the South both days.

The leaderboard changed frequently throughout the weekend. US Naval Academy student Nick Van Wagoner (Annapolis, MD) came out of the blocks smoking in race one, while fellow Annapolis resident and Tufts graduate Nick von der Wense took the checkered flag in race two. These first two races were held in about 8 knots of breeze with lots of flat water.

By the time race three started, the breeze and chop had built nicely. Hard hiking was critical. Brian Shores (Virginia Tech) showed everyone how it's done right as he went wire to wire for the victory. Race four was a mixed bag, but Nick von der Wense was able to deal with it the best. He picked up his second bullet on the day and stood atop the leaderboard with 13 points - a three point lead over Shores, and 4 points ahead of Alden Shattuck (Annapolis),

There was a fantastic lasagna dinner at Severn Sailing on Saturday night. Plenty of beer and good laughs.

Sunday morning we headed out for what was to be a three race day. The wind gods weren't cooperating, but we were able to get two races off. Shattuck picked up the bullet, but with von der Wense coming in second, there was little change overall. The fifth and deciding race was won by Van Wagoner, with Shattuck coming in second and Shores in third. For Shattuck, his 1 - 2 punch was enought to win the regatta for the second time. Congratulations Alden.
