SSA Summer Series

  • Saturday, July 17th, 1999 - Sunday, July 18th, 1999
  • Severn Sailing Association
  • Annapolis, MD

July 17-18th: Sixteen Lasers sailed 10 races over two days, reveling in the 8-12 knot southerly and powering through the tough Annapolis chop. Once again the fleet was very tight, with crowded mark roundings and plenty of action. Bob Tan and Mike Schmidt are currently fighting it out for the top spot, having each won five races apiece. Ted Morgan and Chris Legg are evenly matched in the third and fourth positions.

August 29th: The final day of the series featured a nineteen boat fleet, with SSA ace Alden Shattuck making an appearance along with some Laser masters up from Fishing Bay YC. Conditions started out good enough, with a 5-8 kt breeze from the NW; however it was not to last as the wind gradually died and clocked around to the west. Five races were sailed in mostly frustrating conditions. Mike Waters and Alden made the most of the conditions, finishing 1-2 for the day; Mike Schmidt started out with a win in race 1, but midfleet finishes in the last two races left him in 3rd place. Overall, Mike edged out Bob Tan by three points for the series win, with Ted Morgan in third.
