Crab Claw

A strong group of midshipmen from the Naval Academy joined the fleet of Laser regulars for the Crab Claw regatta, featuring a 30 boat fleet packed with talent. Conditions Saturday were a little on the light side, but we got off three windward/leewards in around 5-7kts and tons of chop. Navy assistant coach (and possible Turkey Olympic representative) Kemal Muslubas led the way with two firsts and a second, demonstrating a serious speed advantage in the prevailing conditions.

Off the water, cold beer and soda was waiting for us on the dock, followed by a pizza dinner courtesy of Ted Morgan and the SSA Laser fleet. Sunday morning dawned with no wind to be found; finally around 11am the southerly started to push through and we got in two more races in a decent 7-10kt breeze. The chop was worse, if possible. Kemal collected a 1-5 to win the series easily; Alden Shattuck sailed a consistent series to wrap up 2nd place (1st Master); Mike Schmidt picked up a win in the last race to move up into the 3rd spot (1st Apprentice). Navy sailor Julia Lillis was the top woman in 8th place overall, with Tyler Raven top junior.
