Hard Rock Hall Masters

  • Saturday, October 16th, 1999 - Sunday, October 17th, 1999
  • Rock Hall YC
  • Rock Hall, MD

Thirteen Laser masters made the trip to Rock Hall YC for the "Hard Rock Hall" Masters and District 11 Masters Championship. Saturday morning, conditions were not as we had hoped, with Hurricane Irene and a frontal system combining to stall out the breeze. The Rock Hall race committee did a great job in the conditions, getting off four windward - leeward races in 5 knots or less of wind. District 11 rep Mike Schmidt led the way with 1-1-2 finishes in the first three contests, John Wright, Star class ace John MacCausland, and Chris Legg in close pursuit.

Saturday night featured happy hour at the Rock Hall bar, where the day's sailing was relived over a few cold Fosters on the deck. Next up was the traditional Eastern Shore Rockfish Fry, after which we retired early (this is Masters racing, after all) and dreamed of more wind on Sunday.

But it was not to be. Sunday gave us overcast skies, and little breeze; by midday we had started the first race in a transient 5kt breeze that shifted around some but was reasonably reliable. Once again, the RC made the best of the conditions, giving us four more races before calling it a day. The action was much closer as the breeze steadied for races six and seven, giving us some very tactical sailing and a tight fleet. Kent Island sailor Terry Clarence made a strong comeback, moving up from midfleet to 4th overall. Mike Schmidt nailed the series with a 1-2 in the last 2 races, while John Wright and John MacCausland tied on points for second overall, with John Wright taking the tiebreaker.
