North Carolina Masters

The 10th Annual North Carolina Masters was sailed off the breezy shores of Oriental NC June 24th & 25th.
19/boats arrived at the grassy launch site from as far away as Atlanta GA,MD,VA& NC. Five races were completed on Saturday & 2 Sunday).
Saturday began w/ 85deg temperatures, SSW breeze ranging between 10 & 18 kts.
The masters division had a tight battle at the top of the fleet in the first few races between last years champ Mike Schmidt (2005),H.Amthor (04) & the North Carolina perennial favorite Martin Willard (03).In a shifty race 1 there was a lead change virtually on every leg.. Martin nailed the final shift on the left to take the 1st race followed by Eddie Novell ,Robert Frechette. Henry & Mike brought up 4th & 5th from the unfavored side(right).
The breeze settled down & slowly built to about 18kts for the remaining races.Henry AKA (Fat Boy) managed to hold Martin & Mike off to take the gun in race 2,however as the breeze came on and the chop steepened the racing became a real test of stamina... Martin showed his superior conditioning and dominated the remaining races winning Race 3,4 & 5.Fat Boy managed to hold Mike & Robert off for a string of 2nd's.
A scrumptious BBQ was put on Saturday evening w/ tall tales of the crazy wave patterns.George also hosted a nice giveaway raffle sponsored by:West Marine,Triton Yachts,Vanguard,M&M's Inland Waterway& Treasure Co.
Sunday brought stronger & steeper waves ..about 15-20kts. Martin one again proved that all the Dist. 12 Ocean sailing he has been doing off Wrightsville beach is paying off. Mike got off to a good start in race 5 w/ a second just ahead of Frank Murphy.
With the fleet virtually reduced in half by the firm conditions, the RC ran one final long race (6/legs )to see who could endure..Martin kept his streak going w/ fat boy 2nd & Mike 3rd.Robert Frechette (the top Apprentice) and Bob McCormack (the top Grand Master) both put in a solid day to settle 4th and 5th.
The Race management run by Oriental Dinghy Club members is outstanding..
