SpinSheet's first Rites of Spring Regatta was held Saturday May 31 in Annapolis. The Laser class featured 21 sailors ranging from class regulars to rusty big boat sailors. Morning saw a light, warm rain falling from an overcast sky. Ever optimistic, the regatta organizers told the early arrivals that the morning rain would serve as a deterrant to powerboaters. The rain soon cleared away, and the clouds slowly broke up as the bulk of the fleet rigged at the Annapolis YC Junior Clubhouse. Racing was conducted at the mouth of the Severn off Chesapeake Harbour. The regatta started in about 12 knots of north-easterly breeze which slowly dropped out and dialed right as the day wore on. SpinSheet Contributing Writer and St. Mary's College sailor Tucker Thompson won the Laser fleet, posting a 1-2-1-3 on the day. Long-time Annapolis sailor and Opti Dad Alden Shattuck finished a stong second. Post race festivites were held at the Annapolis YC Junior Clubhouse and featured plenty of food and drink for all along with first class prizes for every sailor. -Spinsheet Magazine
