Miles River Annual Regatta
- Saturday, August 2nd, 1997 - Sunday, August 3rd, 1997
- Miles River YC
- St. Michaels, MD
Day 1 started out with a 5-7kt breeze that kind of faded in and out as the day progressed. Ted Morgan took the big early lead in race 1 as the wind died completely at the weather mark and the rest of us drifted in all directions. Mike Schmidt worked low on the second reach to capture the lead and the win. Ted came back in the second race to grab the bullet, with Mike taking second. Bruce Irvin led the way around the course in race 3, only to be passed by Mike on the shifty last leg.
Day 2 again started with a decent breeze, we sailed a Gold Cup course only to have the wind die out on the downwind leg. We were then assaulted by a legion of powerboats on their way to lunch at St. Michaels. Mike jumped out to a big lead, only to have it evaporate as the wind died and boats piled up at the leeward mark. He was able to hold off Bob Tan and Ted at the finish to grab another win. Despite a strong sentiment among competitors to call it a day, the RC sent us off on one last race, a painful slog with little wind and lots of wake. The high point of this one was Karen Long picking up a nice left shift and port tacking the fleet at the start. Mike made his move downwind, taking the win to wrap up the series. Bob and Ted tied for second, with Ted taking the tiebreaker. Bruce Irvin sailed well, but had a couple bad races to drop him to fourth overall. -Mike Schmidt
