Oxford Regatta

- Tred Avon YC
- Oxford, MD
Day 1 started out with a light breeze, as the race committee started us upriver of the club near the Choptank. A strongly favored line and an aggressive fleet resulted in the first of several general recalls. We finally got off on an Olympic course in around 5kts of breeze. Mike Schmidt captured the lead on the second weather leg, and held on for the win as Jeremy Wilson made up for a tough start to finish second. Naval Academy coach Ned Jones, a last minute entry from the Snipe class, rounded out the top three. The second race was another Olympic; Jeremy pounded the right side upwind to grab a solid lead early. He went on to win the race, with Mike taking second to tie things up for the series lead.
Day 2 gave us the best wind of the series, in the 7-10 kt range but with a lot of powerboat chop. After the usual general recall, we started off clean in hiking conditions working our way through the confused waves. The leaders were tight as we worked our way around the triangle; on the second beat Tim Olson broke to the right and opened a big lead on the fleet. Meanwhile, Jeremy held a comfortable lead on Mike as they worked their way up the left side. As we rounded the weather mark for the run, Tim was gone, Aaron Serinis was second, and Mike had worked back close to Jeremy. Mike made his move on the run, working the waves and passing Jeremy to weather to round right behind Aaron in third. Jeremy started a tacking duel with Mike on the last leg, which ended at the finish line as Mike crossed on port with about two feet to spare. Tim took the race win, Aaron second; Mike's third was good enough for the overall series win by one point over Jeremy. Ned sailed a consistent series to take third overall. -Mike Schmidt
