West River Annual Regatta

Day 1 started with light winds in the 5-7 kts range, as a last minute change moved the race course out of the river into the Bay. The wind dropped to around 5 kts as we started a Gold Cup course; these conditions resulted in a convergence with the Flying Scot fleet around the weather mark, where many places were gained and lost dodging their huge (and immobile) wind shadows. Mike Schmidt, who was OCS at the start, rallied and worked the right side for a big lead and the bullet, followed by Jeremy Wilson and Ted Morgan. The second race saw much the same conditions, with the downwind finish providing some excitement as Jeff Cox came in from the right to edge Mike and Jeremy at the line.
Day 2 brought more wind and some good-sized waves, as the racing started in 10-15kts of breeze. Bob Tan found conditions to his liking, winning race 3 followed by Jeremy and Jeff. George Panayides captured the final race with good form upwind on the long and brutal weather legs. Jeremy's second in race 4 sealed the regatta win. Mike couldn't find the groove in the breeze, and finished second overall, while George's win in the last race moved him up into third. -Mike Schmidt
