44th Annual Virginia Governor's Cup

Ware River Yacht Club was host to 15 lasers at their annual Governor's Cup Regatta. On Saturday, racing was delayed until a nice 14-16 knot sea breeze filled in allowing for 3 races. Frank Murphy (FBYC) got two 1sts to lead the fleet going into Sunday. He was followed by Jon Deutsch (FBYC) and Steve Wirt(FBYC). On Sunday the fleet got 2 more races in lighter shiftier winds. Jon finished with two firsts to finish first overall.
Throughout most of the races, the fleet stayed pretty tightly packed. 1st through 5th was often separated by only 5-10 boat lengths after nearly 2 miles of sailing. Off the water Saturday evening the site of the regatta was hit hard by a thunderstorm that rolled through just as the last boats were being hauled out of the water. A micro-burst blew through tossing tents, picnic tables and 20-30 boats off their trailers and dollies while most of the sailors looked on from inside the club house. Thankfully nobody was hurt and the boats and club only suffered minor damage.
There were several new faces at the Governor's Cup this year. James Hardesty and Richard Bushey who sail with the Willoughby Bay Dinghy group came up for their first travel regatta and finished 4th and 5th respectively. Madelaine Alderman (FBYC) and Eric Seigel, both juniors sailed for the first time at WRYC and Madelaine got a 2 in one of the races. The top Ware River Sailor was Eriks Osvalds (6th) and he was followed by Taylor Morgan (7th overall). Andrew Bryan was the top junior sailor out of all of the fleets participating on the Governor's Cup course.
There was a separate 4-boat junior course for sailors under 15 years of age. Carl White finished first followed by Jeremy Herrin, Catherine Gillespie and Robert Singleton. The race committee did a good job sailing us in wind and we're looking forward to going back again next year for another great regatta.
