Corsica River Annual Regatta

First and foremost, thank you very much to all the sailors that attended our regatta. We had an exceptional turnout of 36 Lasers including an impressive 13 Radials. CRYC greatly appreciates your support of our regatta. In particular, it is great to see so many juniors racing; we also had a very good number of women sailing as well as masters. This mix can only be good for the class and the sport. We had sailors from all over the Bay as well as even some District 10 sailors from the North.
Due to the large number of Lasers, the RC split the Radials into their own fleet. Therefore, I can only comment on the full rigs; but that in no way diminishes the very strong competition that I saw in the Radial fleet. Hopefully a Radial write-up will follow.
View from the full rig fleet:
Brennen Drysdale (MRYC) sailed very well and won the regatta in convincing fashion. Others also sailed well including Roger Link (WRSC), Peter Gates (CRYC), Jon Deutsch (FBYC), RJ Bay from SSA (who rumor has it is only 15) and Dave Cilffel (MCSC) to name just a few. We had very enjoyable conditions of 10-15 on Saturday and about 5-10 on Sunday. Determining what the wind was going to do was a major determinant for both days as there was a different wind at each end of the race course and it changed over time. Those that did well did it with boat speed and tactical decision making.
Rig set up: Brennen's setup in the heavier air on Saturday was to work hard to keep the boat flat, he cranked on the cunningham but kept the outhaul fairly loose to keep power in the rig and as the puffs were of fairly short duration. On Sunday Peter Gates showed very good boat speed in light air, as did Jon Deutsch. Peter set up with a lot of vang to flatten the sail, fairly loose outhaul and just enough cunningham to take the wrinkles out.
Tactically: Tactically it was a very tricky weekend. The current was not much of a factor as it was fairly slack during the racing. Saturday was great wind at about 10-15 from the SW going to the SSE. Early in the day it seemed to pay to go right as there was better pressure there out of the shadow of Spaniard Neck. Though, as the wind went to the SSE the consistently best results seemed to be had by taking opportunities to work up the left side. The wind seemed to deviate to the left off the land and then return to the gradient wind as it approached the right side, so you pick up some nice shifts closer to shore that were not available on the right. There was a different set of decisions to be made near the top mark as you got close into Spaniard Neck and it seemed better pressure made it beneficial to make your final approach to the mark from the right.
Off the wind, neither side seemed particularly favored. Some sailors made gains by being on the correct jibe so you could sail by the lee. It also helped a bit to get in front of, and stay in, the puffs as they came down the course.
Saturday night a large number of people enjoyed a great dinner of crab cakes and chicken. We had great music and dancing with a very good Blue Grass band. Large numbers of the younger set swam off the beach and off the anchored boats until well after dark as the rest of us sat by the water enjoying a warm breeze, beautiful view and great company.
The wind was a lot more difficult to figure out on Sunday. It was lighter, maybe 5-10 with some lighter lulls. In the first race a big lefty came in and most people stayed on long port tacks, with some small gains to be made by working a bit left early, Peter Gates had great speed and attained a significant lead. The wind dropped as we approached the first mark and down the downwind leg and all bets were off, except Peter still had a good lead. After rounding the leeward mark, with light wind out of the South most of the leading pack went left, but a few boats, including Dave Cilffel saw the Southwesterly filling back in and went hard right. Once the guys that went right got into the new breeze they were off and running with pressure and angle and made big gains into the finish. The second race was a close run affair with many people making gains. It appeared that the left again paid early on but the second half of the leg belonged to the guys from the right. As a thunderstorm approached after race two the race committee called it a day and everyone headed in for more food and drink. - Nicholas Place
