A geographically diverse group of nine full-rigs and three radials showed up for the MRYC Annual Regatta in Saint Michael’s, MD, last weekend. The turnout quadrupled last year’s showing. Cheers to those who drove all the way from DC, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
The arrival of the late-week cold front brought welcome relief from the summer doldrums, dispelling all perceptions of typical sailing conditions on the Eastern Shore in August. It was spray top weather and the orientation of the Miles River allowed the northerly to barrel right down the pipe – straight from the Arctic Circle.
On both days, the race committee did a nice job of mixing things up to give the racers a variation of triangle, windward-leeward, and modified Olympic courses. After a brief midday lull on Saturday, the breeze cranked up again, the committee moved the windward mark halfway to Annapolis, and the sailors got in a long, physically demanding race. While reaching legs might not appeal to everyone, there is something to be said for blasting around surfing in October-like conditions in the middle of August.
An anticipated drop created an interesting situation with several sailors tied at the top going into the second day. Eastport Yacht Club sailor Andrew Cole settled the matter in the last race. He was the most consistent finisher, never fell out of the top three, and was most deserving of the win.
Radial sailor Elizabeth Dudley cleaned up and received the award for coolest sail number.
