What a beautiful weekend...my thoughts as Jane I drove through the Eastern Shore on Saturday morning. Clear skies, little humidity, and a decent breeze developing. Once the Magothy River team was rigged up and headed out on the water, there was already shifty but reliable breeze of the Rock Hall shore, and you could see right away that the weather mark might be tricky up near the shore. We also had a mixed bag of fleets; I remember thinking "I'm not messing with those Hghlanders, they are bigger than Flying Scots!"

The RC got us started off right on time, and we sailed the first of four triangle-windward courses. The course was fun, because there were plenty of shifts upwind, and the first reach was deep enough to be tactical, especially with the current running left to right across the course. The second reach was a blast, especially later in the day when the wind picked up. Early in the day, it was hard to get too far to the right, although in at least one weather leg it seemed like there were boats coming in from all sides at the mark. Bob Tan had the groove in the first two races, I felt fortunate to pick up a pair of 2's. Rob Maxwell was right there as well, along with John Snyder from RHYC. In the afternoon, the breezed filled and I was able to get the boat moving at last. John seemed to like the conditions as well. scoring two seconds, with Bob and Rob in close pursuit.

Meanwhile, we had no less thatn four entries in the womens division, with Liz Hancock topping out on the first day and Jane Schmidt not far behind. It was great to see Roger and Earlyn Bartholomee back in lasers. Roger handicapped himself before leaving shore by gashing his hand severly with a knife while rigging, but toughed it out and was rewarded with a close 4th in race #4.

Sunday arrived with a strong breeze, already fading as we headed out. We managed to get in two decent races in light and shifty conditions, this time windward-leeward. Jane showed the fleet some speed as she rounded the weather mark first in the early going. Liz also looked good with a second place finish. It got a bit uglier as time went by, with some big holes appearing in the wind as we finished up the second race. After the second race, the RC announced a final
"drag race" to the finish line, one leg only in a really dying breeze. At the start, the breeze totally faded and then really got weird. A group pulled away, led by Jane while the rest of us wallowed in the airless vacuum hoping for any breeze at all. After an agonizing lef, Jane pulled out the win, Bob was second, and the rest of struggled across as best we can. After the results were tallied, Mike had the regatta win, with Bob in second, Rob in third, Liz picked off Jane by one point to take the womens division.

We were treated to the usual Rock Hall festivities and plenty of cold beverages at the bar. The first place finishers were rewarded with spiffy embroidered travel bags-nice! Everyone should pencil this one in for next year.
