GLOUCESTER -- Beautiful weather and keen competition marked the 40th Annual Virginia Governor's Cup

Regatta which attracted more than 60 One-Design sailboats from seven states and the District of Columbia to the two-day event on the Ware River Saturday and Sunday, August 7th & 8th.

Here also to help mark the 40th year observance at the Ware River Yacht Club was Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner who presented the coveted Governor's Cup to Albacore sailor Marty Hublitz of McLean. Hublitz sailed with his two sons, ages eight and 11, as crew and took three firsts and two seconds to lead the pack of 15 Albacores for the five-race series.

Hublitz's win broke the three-year winning streak of Delta Airlines pilot Mark Wheeler of Virginia Beach and the Hampton One Design class which turn out 14 boats for the anniversary event. Kevin Hanna of Seaford, member of the Hampton Yacht Club, place first in the Hampton class. The Governor's Cup winner is determined by the number of starts in the race series. It was extremely close with Albacores edging the Hamptons 72-70. One Albacore missed the first of three races on Saturday and did not compete in Sunday races. The Laser class also turned out 14 boats but the number of starts trailed with several boats missing one or more of Sunday's two races.

The Congressman's Cup was awarded to Regatta Chairman Blair Farinholt in recognition of his long-time contribution to the Governor's Cup Regattas and promotion of sailing on the Bay. Farinholt has played a key role as Regatta or Race chairman in the past 35 years of the Governor's Cup sponsorship by Ware River Yacht Club and was also active in promoting informal racing competition before the club was formed.

The third major award, the Gloucester Cup , established in 1970 by the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce to encourage Junior sailing interest was won by Taylor Morgan, 15, of Williamsburg, member of WRYC who won a second and four third places in the Laser class. The trophy goes annually to the top Regatta sailor under age 18.The award was presented by Pam Douglas, Chamber president.

Race committee Chairman Bob James, a charter member of WRYC , a past Olympic sailor and winner of numerous national and international championships, said the competition was keen and challenging to the sailors. Shifting winds ranged from about five to 10 knots on Saturday, started light for the first race on Sunday, then picked up to eight to 10 knots for the final race.

Governor Warner attended a luncheon Sunday given by the Regatta committee at a nearby residence and then he and his two daughters traveled by boat a short distance to the yacht club for the awards ceremonies, wrapping up the two-day event. Ben C. Garrett, awards chairman said Warner was only the fourth Governor to present the award while in office.
