Oxford Regatta

This past weekend Tred Avon Yacht Club hosted the Oxford Regatta. Once again they did not disappoint, as they put together a first class event. The food was good (crab cakes, bbq chicken), the music was fun, and the sailing was excellent.

30 full rig Lasers, and 5 or 6 radials participated, making it, again, one of the best attended Laser regattas on the Chesapeake. Who knows what the real attendance figures would have been if both spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge hadn't been shut down for several hours Saturday morning. I've been told that this has never happend before. A number of people were stranded with their boats at the western shore toll both. Others opted to drive an additional 2 hours out of their way to circumvent the Chesapeake (head North past Baltimore to Elkton, and drop down the eastern shore); some of whom still made the first start! And of course there were likely a few who opted not to bother with the traffic, given the forecast for rain and congestion. In any event, only a few people missed the first race, as the bridge was re-opened around 10am. AND, if everyone had taken my advice to arrive on Friday evening, none of this would have been a problem.

Putting all the Bridge problems aside, TAYC started the regatta on time. Log Canoes were racing, PHRF boats were racing, as well as Stars, 420s, Penguins, Optis, and Bytes. On the Laser course, 4 triangle - windward - leeward races were held on Saturday in a light SEasterly breeze. Bob Tan, Ted Morgan, and Mike Schmidt all showed good speed around the course, with Tan taking 2 bullets.

On Saturday night, the pace picked up with TAYC offering 2 live bands. It's safe to say that the Laser fleet dominated the dance floor - it was a scary sight and a great time was had by all!!!

On Sunday we were treated to a solid southerly breeze that built to 15+ by the end of the morning. Two races were held, with Bob Tan securing the overall victory, while others secured some mud on their sails. Mike Schmidt most likely was second overall, but at this time - complete results are not available. Did anyone stay for the awards ceremony?

Those making the trip over from Annapolis included SSA members Gregg Herbert, Diane Burton, Conner Herr, Rob Trenkamp, Ted Morgan, Karen Long, Jen Cook, Kim Couranz, Bob Tan, Teri Munz, Susan Shipman, Hal Whitacre, Brian Shores, and Amie Boothe, as well as Brady White. In addition, two boats made it down from Philly/Marsh Creek.

If you didn't make it you missed a great time. The good news is that it's always a great time, so mark your calendars NOW for 2002....the Oxford Regatta is almost always the second weekend in August!
