ACC Saturday Report
May 2nd, 2009

This morning sailors from all over the east coast and beyond arrived at the 2009 Laser Standard Atlantic Coast Championship at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis Maryland.  Following the skipper’s meeting 83 sailors took to the water with winds between 5-10 miles per hour under overcast skies.  The sailors might have wished for more wind, but were thankful for the overcast skies to keep the power boaters from coming out.

After 2 failed starts, the first race was started under black flag. The leaders mostly stuck to the right side of the Olympic course. The first couple mark roundings for the middle of the fleet were a little chaotic as sailors were still adjusting to the big fleet and new rules. The judges kept sailors from violating rule 42 and a half dozen or so sailors found themselves doing turns.

Dave Perkowski took a bullet in the first race followed by Raul Aguayo and Ray Wuff.

The wind picked up a little bit for most of the second race before starting to shift to the east during the last two legs. Again most of the leaders stuck to the right side of the course.

This time Ward Hackett finished first. He was followed by Robert Pickens and Evan Lewis.

Following the second race, the Race Committee led by PRO Mike Waters, waited about a half an hour for the wind to settle in a little more easterly direction. A race was started, but quickly abandoned when it became clear the wind wasn’t going to hold.

The sailors were towed to shore where the Dolly Girls® had the dollies lined up numerically so they could be quickly brought to sailors hitting the dock. Upon hitting shore sailors were provided refreshments and snacks while raffle prizes from SpinSheet, Helly Hansen and APS were given out.

At 6 the sailors were treated to a Steak Dinner courtesy of Dark and Stormy’s and afterward sailors hung around for a while before eventually scattering for the night.

Tomorrow the fleet is looking forward to a little bit more wind in the 5-10 knot range and hoping the showers stay away.
