SSA Frostbite Results

Sunday turned out to be better than the forecast. Luckily the rain held off for the afternoon and twenty Lasers competed in 6 races. Gavin O'Hare won the day, followed by Bryan Fishback in second and Matt Schofield in third.

Thanks to Hal Whitacre and Margaret Podlich for running the RC boat and Hugh Elliot and Quinn Tobin for running the mark boat.

Only one Frostbiting day left! Don't miss it :) - Dorian

Light shifty breeze out of the North and warm temperatures.... is this the end of winter?

Hats off to Bryan Fishback. He sailed a great day and had one poor finish which cost him the day. If I did one thing well, it must have been consistency. I tried to start at the favored end each race (pin first half and then boat second half). Although, everytime I was next to Brian, he managed to beat me across the finish line.

This day was a shifty day with many lulls. I tried to track the wind and go to the side where I expected it to fill. Oftentimes, this meant keeping my eyes out of the boat more than in the boat. That said, I certainly tried to shift gears as the breeze collapsed and quickly eased vang & cunningham and mainsheet. Keeping boat moving through the water seemed to be key. As the start line was competitive, part of my success stemmed from having good starts. I think I was fairly agressive today and that probably helped. I beleive I get better when I push myself on the line, and I look forward to the competition for that pole position.

In a nuts took a few risks on the final beats that mostly did not pay off. Covering is almost always the right thing to do. I lost a few boats because I got greedy or saw breeze that did not materialize. Bryan Fishback's downwind legs were exceptional. I think he gained boats on this leg every race. As far as I could tell, his success was a combination of sailing fast with everything eased and heeled to windward, but also anticipating where the pressure would come from and then positioning his boat for the inside overlap leeward mark rounding.

hell, success on this day was achieved by starting well, looking upwind and targeting breeze/shifts, and capitalizing on mark rounding opportunities. I believe we have one more Sunday left and I look forward to seeing you all on the water.
