Hampton Roads Frostbite Report for 4/11
April 12th, 2010

Mother nature pulled out all the stops Sunday for a spectacular day of racing on the Elizabeth River, and the Hampton Roads Laser crowd (and Emory in his Taser) said: "Thank you very much."

In all, nine Laser were on the line for a friendly regatta in 5 to 10 knots of southwesterly breezes and clear skies with temperatures hitting just over 70. (Note: time to pack up the wetsuits. Those who wore them - me for instance - fried.)

The day belonged to Mike Strauss who took top honors with consistent finishes in the top. Great job Mike and remember to eat a lot -- you look so thin and light.

Mike was followed on the podium by ODU sailors Zachary Runci and Gavin Rudolph ( in that order ) even after missing the first two races our of about seven. Great job guys and thanks for all of the advice on the water, it really helps build up the fleet. Both of them express shock at their high finishes, and said "just give us last place finishes for the races we missed." We did guys. And you still trounced the old guard.

Thanks again to Cameron Barclift for running the committee boat and thanks to all who came out and made it such a great event. The fleet would also again like to extend it's thanks to ODU and the sailing team for being such gracious hosts. (The thought of college students coming out at 11 a.m. on a Sunday to open up is hard to imagine and even harder to repay -- we appreciate it Zach)

If you have missed the series so far, it's not too late to join the fun. We have two more dates planned: Sunday April 18 and Sunday, April 25. Most of us get together around 10:30 to 11:00 to start rigging up; racing starts about noon and is over by 3:00.
