Hampton Roads Regatta Report for 5/2
May 3rd, 2010

A full-on day on the Elizabeth River saw five-Lasers and a Sunfish duke it out with short skirmishes around a tight windward-leeward course. At stake: Bragging rights among the Hampton Roads Sailing dinghy community.

Go ahead Cameron, brag. The young man in the group, wisely rigged up a radial and consistently managed to be the last man standing when the gusts sent his elders centerboard up. Just wait till it goes light, Leon, then we’ll larn ’em.

Weather reports put the wind at about 16 knots with gusts of 20. And there were a few blasts that sent the sands of Craney Island swirling in a fog-like mist toward Naval Station Norfolk and the NIT terminals. Blowing from the southwest, the water was relatively flat and fast, so the racing was really fun. It was officially hot out and the water has warmed up enough to be fairly pleasant. (and still jellyfish-free)

With a relatively small fleet, starting was done without a committee boat. In all, we completed seven races – short sprints with 3-minute starts. A good warm-up for the upcoming spring and summer series.

For those who couldn’t make it out, we sure missed you and look forward to reconnecting. As usual, if you are on Facebook, you can go to Hampton Roads Sailing to keep posted on upcoming events and check out photos of past series.
